outhouse gallery is a small, independent, artist-run creative space located in Brunswick Park, Camberwell. Originally a public toilet, our gallery's mission is to be open, public, and accessible to both facilitators and visitors.
Officially opened at the end of March 2024, the gallery is dedicated to facilitating art initiatives in the park, providing artists with a platform to grow and experiment with their practices. We offer a diverse range of activities, including free exhibitions, live performances, and workshops, and will be soon providing a unique space for recording and broadcasting an independent radio station.

The Shoe Museum
For two weeks ONLY a curious collection of shoes will be on display at outhouse gallery.
The Shoe Museum curated by Stella Pearce and Robin Finch Pickering has artefacts from a wide variety of contributors all with stories to share.
The exhibition gathers together a crowd of very special, moving, strange and silly stories held in shoe form. The shoes give a voice to both the anecdotes they have experienced and the ghostly traces of where they have been and who has owned them. The exhibition will be accompanied by a booklet with all the tales each shoe or shoe related item has to tell.

boundaries
What are the boundaries between public and private space?
Boundaries could be physical, such as borders between countries;
Boundaries also could be invisible, the world can appear so different from one to another. We all have different boundaries based on our various living experiences and cultural backgrounds.
A boundary could be your skin or the clothes you wear, where keeping others out or hides your inner self.
Boundaries could be the disconnect between your thoughts and voice, the never ending sentence devoid of punctuation.
Rather than hold the boundaries of this space, we would like to hear the boundaries in your life.
What is your boundary?

spoken word and live music
In collaboration with outhouse gallery, The Elegists collective is hosting an acoustic summer session in Brunswick Park.
The Elegists are a socio-political and artistic collective, concerned with the use of public space, the formation of community and identity, as well as the fomentation of inclusive and accessible creative spaces. The summer sessions intend to be an opportunity to gather, be inspired, and reclaim a third place.

outhouse live
Noah performed a variety of compositions and improvised pieces that evoke the sea, the port and the sun. Improvising with/against himself and field recordings, his work on the cello is as much textural as tonal.

What can you say? It’s family.
For her first solo presentation, Stella has made a series of drawings and paintings as well as a special site specific installation. The title of the show is borrowed from Jill Scott’s song Family Reunion from the 2004 album Beautifully Human, elements of which are sampled from the 1973 The Escorts song Look Over Your Shoulder (recorded while the members were in incarceration in New Jersey). Family Reunion describes all the different goings on at a family party. The song came out when Stella was 7, her mum had the album. Stella’s work suggests the complicated intricacies of close interpersonal dynamics, body language, and all that stuff swept under the rug. She is working out who she is and who she can be and what she needs to say as part of a family full of stories.
‘Look over your shoulder

Leave the Door Open
Dani Smith, Jemima Pike and Taika Tontti all find inspiration from vulnerability, fragility, gender equality, loneliness and love.
“This space which used to be a public toilet inspired us think about toilet experiences on a social and gender norm level. With this installation we wish to challenge ideas of vulnerability and socialisation in a way that FLINTA* experience or should experience public toilets.” -Taika Tontti
For this installation outhouse gallery has been transformed into a sensory experience by using sound, smell, touch and sight through a reconstructed bathroom scene using soap, metal, fabric, sound and film.
FLINTA* Acronym | Adjective
stands for: female, lesbian, inter, non-binary, trans and agender people.

bloom
“bloom” was the inaugural group show at the outhouse gallery, celebrating themes of new beginnings, reinvention, and nature.
As the season of renewal unfolds, and the outhouse gallery opens, we seek artwork that embodies the spirit of blooming—whether it’s the blossoming of nature, the exploration of growth and change, or the glow of new beginnings.
